WHAT IS YOUR PELVIC FLOOR?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues located at the base of your pelvis. Think of it like a hammock or sling that stretches from your pubic bone in the front to your tailbone in the back, and side to side between your sit bones.

These muscles support some of the most important parts of your body, including your: bladder, uterus (womb) and rectum (lower bowel). Your pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in your everyday health and wellness by helping with: bladder control, bowel control , sexual function, core support, pregnancy and childbirth, and postpartum recovery – healing after birth, whether vaginal or C-section. If you have low back pain, hip pain, sciatica, abdomen pain or groin pain; pelvic floor therapy can help.

Your pelvic floor changes through life

Your pelvic floor changes over time and may need extra care during: puberty and periods, pregnancy and postpartum, menopause and aging, after surgeries or injuries, and caring for your pelvic floor is an essential part of whole-body wellness—just like taking care of your heart, joints, or mental health.

Pre-Pregnancy:

Preparing Your Body for Conception

The foundation of a healthy pregnancy begins before you conceive. Pelvic floor physical therapy can
• Assess and address any pre-existing pelvic floor dysfunction
• Optimize muscle coordination and core stability
• Support proper bladder, bowel, and sexual function
• Reduce discomfort from conditions like endometriosis or PCOS
• Improve overall pelvic alignment and mobility

Preparing your pelvic floor before pregnancy can help ease future transitions and reduce complications later on.

First Trimester:

Early Support

Your body begins to change immediately in early pregnancy. We offer gentle, tailored therapy that
• Addresses nausea- or posture-related tension
• Supports spinal and pelvic alignment as ligaments begin to loosen
• Starts education on pelvic floor awareness and breath connection

• Prevents or manages urinary frequency or early incontinence
• Assess constipation and bloating in early pregnancy

It’s never too early to start connecting with your pelvic floor.

Second Trimester:

Building Strength and Resilience

As your pregnancy progresses, you may notice more physical and
postural changes. Our therapists can help:
• Teach safe, effective exercises to maintain strength
• Manage back, hip, and pelvic pain
• Begin targeted labor prep techniques

• Monitor and support pelvic organ function
• Improve circulation and manage swelling

We’ll help your body adapt and thrive during these transformative months.

Third Trimester:

Labor Preparation and Birth Readiness

This stage is all about preparing for childbirth. Pelvic floor therapy can help:
• Teach perineal massage techniques to reduce tearing risk
• Improve pelvic mobility for an easier labor and delivery
• Practice breathing and pushing strategies that protect the
pelvic floor

• Support optimal baby positioning through body alignment
• Reduce fear and anxiety with a focus on informed,
empowered birth

Labor prep is a cornerstone of our care—whether you’re planning a vaginal or cesarean birth.

Postpartum:

Healing and Rebuilding

The postpartum period is a time of healing, adjustment, and rediscovery. Our therapy sessions support you in:
• Reconnecting with your core and pelvic floor
• Addressing any tearing, episiotomy, or C-section scar issues
• Resolving urinary or bowel incontinence
• Managing diastasis recti (abdominal separation)

• Supporting sexual health and pelvic comfort
• Rebuilding strength safely, whether you’re 6 weeks or 6 years postpartum

No matter how long it’s been since birth, it’s never too late to get support.

Steps for your pelvic floor evaluation

Our goal is for you to feel heard and seen from your first appointment to your continuing care and journey to meet your needs

interview

Review of current and past medical history. Your therapist will ask you several questions related to your pelvic floor. We will cover details regarding bowel, bladder, and sexual function as well as current or past medical history. We will discuss other relevant past medical history, medications, and injuries that you have experienced.

physical examination

Physical Examination. Your therapist will begin with an overall body assessment. This may include an assessment of your strength, mobility, alignment, balance, posture, sensation, and coordination.

pelvic floor assessment

Your pelvic floor is a private area, your therapist will discuss the goals and purpose of an internal examination prior to the exam taking place. An internal examination allows for the therapist to assess the strength, endurance, coordination, pain, tension and awareness of your pelvic floor muscles. There are special tests that can be performed with an internal examination.

what our clients are saying?

Britta Dalbey connected so well with my daughter and helped to evaluate her speech needs and develop and implement a treatment plan. I knew I wanted her to help with my son when we discovered he needed help with speech as well. She proved just as invaluable with him. We saw excellent results and my kids always looked forward to visits with Britta.

Courtney is amazing! She is very understanding, listens, asks questions, and really gets up in your business, which is a good thing if you want a strong, respectable, and straight forward therapist.
