A lactation consultant can be an invaluable resource for anyone navigating breastfeeding or infant feeding—especially when challenges arise or confidence is low. While many parents assume support is only needed when something goes wrong, the truth is that guidance at any stage can make a significant difference.

No, a referral is NOT required to begin therapy services at Heart and Sole. However, some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage, so we recommend checking with your insurance if you have questions.

An outpatient lactation consultant provides one-on-one support to parents and babies after they leave the hospital. Their goal is to help you establish, improve, or maintain feeding—whether you’re breastfeeding, pumping, or combination feeding.

Breastfeeding can look effortless for some women and incredibly challenging for others—but that difference usually comes down to a mix of factors, not personal ability or effort.

One major factor is early support and guidance. Women who receive hands-on help in the first few days—especially with latch and positioning—are more likely to have a smoother experience. Without that support, small issues can quickly turn into bigger problems like pain or low milk supply.
