A strong and properly functioning pelvic floor is vital for children to develop appropriate bowel and bladder control. Pediatric pelvic floor dysfunction affects at least 20% of school aged children worldwide. Millions of children are suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction and their families are left frustrated not knowing how to help. These children are often left feeling shame or embarrassment. Pelvic floor therapy is a successful non-invasive treatment for many conditions.

Our number one goal is to make your child feel safe and to have fun! Pediatric pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the pelvic floor muscles in children. These muscles play a crucial role in bladder and bowel control. This type of therapy involves exercises, manual techniques, and education to help children improve their pelvic floor function and alleviate any related symptoms.
Pelvic floor health is important for children as it can affect their overall physical and emotional well-being. A strong and properly functioning pelvic floor can help with bladder and bowel control, and prevent urinary and fecal incontinence. It can also help with posture, balance, and core stability. On the other hand, pelvic floor dysfunction in children can lead to a range of issues such as bedwetting, constipation, and pelvic pain.
Early treatment in children with pelvic floor dysfunction can create better bowel and bladder habits enabling children to develop a healthy pelvic floor as they continue to grow. Early detection of dysfunction can help prevent worsening symptoms such as wetting, fecal incontinence, pelvic pain and fear with toileting. Addressing bowel and bladder issues in children can have an immediate impact on a child’s confidence and self-esteem.
Caregivers sometimes ignore bowel and bladder problems because they think they will just grow out of it and accidents are a normal part of developing. Unfortunately, many children do not grow out of it and have bowel and bladder problems that persist into their teenage and adulthood years. Heart and Sole Pelvic Health is dedicated to helping children and their parents identify underlying issues and provide solutions unique to their child’s circumstances.
Our number one goal is to make your child feel safe and to have fun!
Interview the child and the caregiver to gain a better understanding about the child’s current condition, past medical history, and previous treatments.
Physical Evaluation. This includes a comprehensive whole body assessment that looks at your child’s posture, strength, mobility, and a complete pelvic floor muscle assessment. All assessments are completed externally. Surface EMG biofeedback may be performed.
Interventions. Pelvic floor muscle exercises, education for the child and caregiver, behavioral modifications, manual therapy techniques, biofeedback training, and home exercise program. The therapist will work closely with your child’s healthcare providers and will refer to other specialists if additional support is warranted.
